Knowing where your refund stands shouldn’t be stressful. The IRS gives you a simple, secure way to track your refund online — and it only takes a minute.
✅ Step 1: Go to Where’s My Refund?
Visit the IRS refund tracker at: IRS.gov/Refunds
This tool updates once every 24 hours, usually overnight.
✅ Step 2: Have These Three Things Ready
You’ll need:
Your Social Security Number
Your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.)
Exact refund amount from your tax return
Enter the information exactly as it appears on your return.
✅ Step 3: Review Your Refund Status
The IRS will show one of three statuses:
Return Received – They’ve got your return and are processing it.
Refund Approved – Your refund has been approved and is on the way.
Refund Sent – Your refund has been issued (direct deposit or check).
How Long Does It Usually Take?
E‑filed returns: 21 days or less
Paper returns: 4–6 weeks (sometimes longer during peak season)
If Your Refund Is Delayed
Common reasons include:
Identity verification
Errors on the return
Additional review
Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit (PATH Act delays early in the season)
If the IRS needs more information, they’ll send a letter — never an email or text.
